October Landscapes in the Rockies

Sunlit Larches from Burstall Pass. Photo by Brian Van Tighem.

October has always been my favourite month in the Rockies. Landscapes go from green to yellow to white all in one short month.  Larches turn gold in the alpine reaches and leaves in the valleys are draped white with snow before they have a chance to fall.  The light changes as quickly as the colours.  Days become shorter and the mornings and afternoons are filled with warm light from a low southern sun.

Even the air changes.  Crisp air before sunrise and after sunset remind the lungs of winter’s chill, and moisture snakes through the valleys in low rolling fog.

Brian grew up in towns throughout the Rockies before heading to Vancouver to study Digital Photography. After being released back into the wild he found his way back to the mountains he calls home to pursue the art of wedding and portrait photography, as well as take advantage of all the opportunities the Rockies hold. He can usually be found with one eye in the camera and his nose in the wildflowers. brianvantighem.com
