Highline Magazine is a connection to the unique mountain environment and culture of Canada’s Rocky Mountains. We feature a wide range of topics—from summer and winter sports to environmental issues, local heroes, health, humour and more. Based in the gateway to the Rockies, our content is largely local and has a distinctly authentic Bow Valley flavour.
Interested in contributing to Highline Magazine? Before you send us your photos, please read the following guidelines to ensure you get a speedy response from our team. We also strongly recommended that you leaf through at least one past issue of Highline Magazine (if not more!) to get a feel for the style and focus of our content before submitting your photographs. Issues are available online at www.highlineonline.ca.
We are primarily interested in working with photographers who have UNIQUE images of the following:
- People enjoying various outdoor sports in the Rockies. From homebody to hardman, we look for a nice mix of adventures, big and small. Activities include (but are not confined to) hiking, mountain biking, road touring, climbing, mountaineering, camping, paddling, kayaking, x-country skiing, cliff-jumping, snowman building, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing. Go nuts.
- Wildlife of the Canadian Rockies: Keep it classy! Think crisp, clear, and close-up (but not TOO close!).
- Mountain landscapes: local or international, macro or wide angle, we’re looking for shots that make us want to “be there.”
- People engaging with the wilderness and environment in playful and interesting ways. A sense of humour in your photography is your best bet.
We will occasionally publish images to accompany stories and stock lists are also welcome. We do hire photographers on a contract assignment basis as well. If you have a story to go along with your images, pitch it! Check out our Writers’ Guidelines for more details.
How to Submit:
- If your photographs fit the above description and you believe they are of a high enough quality to appear in Highline, please feel free to email us 7-10 low-res JPEGs of your best work or send us the address of your website. Please allow at least 2 weeks before following up on a submission.
- If your photo is chosen to be run in the magazine, we will contact you to provide us with a high-resolution (300dpi) version of the image. Please label high-res images as [ImageName_YourName].
- If you are working with us on contract assignment basis, before beginning we’ll send you an Assignment Letter, which will outline the details of your submission, amount to be paid for the piece and any other relevant information. When you have confirmed receipt of the Assignment Letter, the letter will act as your contract with Highline Magazine. By accepting the Assignment Letter, you express your understanding that work published in Highline Magazine may also be published in the digital version of the magazine.
- Make sure any recognizable models in photographs have signed a model release (we will provide you with Highline’s model release if you do not have your own). This is the photographer’s responsibility.
Please let us know whether or not your submission has previously been published in another publication, or is scheduled to be. We highly discourage our contributors from submitting the same photographs to multiple publications at once. Wherever possible, we are looking to purchase First Time Publication Rights, and require that the photo appear in Highline for one year before appearing anywhere else (unless otherwise permitted).
